Government Island
Historic Quarry and Hiking Trail
*This site is not yet open to the public.*
This historic 18th and 19th century quarry site provided Aquia sandstone for the construction of the White House and the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Now slated to become a park, Government Island is planned to contain a boardwalk to the island, and a natural hiking trail around the island, with interpretive signs to help depict its rich, nationally significant history. Please watch for more details about the future development of this trail.
One stone quarry on the island. Hand-carved trenches. Chisel marks still visible in the stone.
Government Island was listed on the National Register in April 2007. The future Government Island trail is a designated site on the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail (PHNST) of the National Park Service.
This site is not yet open to the public. Construction on the trail is dependent upon available funding. Please check back for more details and development information.
