In 1606, Captain John Smith and 15 fellow Englishmen began a survey of the Chesapeake Bay and its principal estuaries. Captain Smith used the information he gained on this journey to create a detailed map of the Chesapeake region. Originally published in 1612, the John Smith map was the source for all colonial Virginia maps for over 60 years, and continues to be used as a reference for Native American settlements of the colonization period. Many of Captain Smith's place names are still in use today. Note the detailed images of Chief Powhatan in the far left corner and the Susquehanna Indian portrayed on the far right. These images were used in many map updates of the 18th century.
