Courthouse Area

Cultural, civic, work, shop, living and recreational areas must be woven together with parks and streets to create a walkable and memorable Town of Stafford, the seat of the County Government.

At the heart of the Courthouse Area, the pedestrian-friendly intersection of Courthouse Road (VA-630) and Jefferson Davis Highway (US-1) draws local residents, employees, and visitors to linger, enjoying the area’s offerings and attractions.

Looking eastward down Courthouse Road (VA-630), outdoor dining and open spaces provide gathering places for people working or visiting the County’s governmental center.

Opportunity

The Courthouse Area encompasses the Stafford Courthouse, County Government buildings -- including the Ford T. Humphrey Public Safety building, Stafford Hospital Center, and an eclectic mix of offices, shops, and homes. The Stafford Hospital Center, opened since 2009, has brought additional employees and visitors to the area and continues to expand. A new interchange is planned at Exit 140, off I-95, which will make access easier to this concentration of activity.

Potential

The Courthouse area includes the intersection of Jefferson Davis Highway (US Route 1) and Courthouse Road (Rt. 630). Free-standing retail and office buildings, generally supporting government activities, have evolved here. Aside from providing primary access to the County Administration Building, Courthouse Road connects Jefferson Davis Highway to I-95. The new projects and proposed interchange bring the potential for reinvestment.

Project Status

The new Chichester Building is under construction to provide much needed office space for Stafford’s Commonwealth Attorney.

Engineering design work is underway to improve the streetscape along Jefferson Davis Highway (US Route 1) between Hope Road and Hospital Center Boulevard, and along Courthouse Road between Jason Mooney Drive and Stafford Avenue. Improvements include replacing substandard sidewalks, constructing missing sidewalks, and other pedestrian-oriented amenities.

The Virginia Department of Transportation continues to work on the engineering design for the new I-95/Courthouse Road interchange. Public hearings for this project are anticipated to occur during the Fall of 2012.
